Amanda Norton was a focus of the letter mentioned in my previous post. Here are some records which relate to her life.
A marriage index record for her marriage to Danforth (or Danfreth?) Pepper, October 1, 1845, in Wells, Vermont, officiating minister Jas. M. Driver. From the database "Vermont, Vital Records, 1720-1908".
The 1850 census of the United States shows Danforth, Amanda, and Louisa C. Pepper living in Poultney, Rutland, Vermont. Daniel is 31, Amanda is 30, and Louisa is 2 (and therefore born circa 1848). Danforth is a "labourer".
In the 1860 American census the Pepper family is now living in Granville, Washington County, New York. The family now includes Danforth, Amanda and Louisa (now listed as ages 42, 42, and 12 respectively) and also Emily, age 5, and Sylvia Andrews, age 80. She must be a relation of Amanda's mother Amaryllis Andrews. Danforth is still listed as a labourer and the family is enumerated on the same page as the William and Amaryllis Norton family, which indicates that they may live close by.
The 1870 American census reveals that the family has moved to Pawlet, Rutland, Vermont. The household now consists of 51 year old Danforth, now a shoemaker, 52 year old Amanda, and a 66-year-old woman named Rebecca Hanks.
On August 31, 1870, Danforth died in Pawlet at age 51 (index record from Vermont Vital Records, 1720-1908.
He was buried in the Mountain View Cemetery in West Pawlet, Vermont. His tombstone is only partially visible.
Marriage record for Emma Pepper, the daughter of Danforth and Amanda Pepper, to George Mundy of Orwell, Ontario, age 24, cheesemaker. The marriage took place on July 21, 1877, in the Methodist Parsonage in Ingersoll, Ontario. According to this record, Emma was born in New York State and was 22 years old on the wedding date.
The Aylmer Cemetery, in Aylmer, Ontario, has a grave marker for Amanda, who died March 20, 1884. The name of her husband is obscured in the picture of the stone, but the transcript says she is the wife of Danforth Dean Pepper. Amanda died at 66 years of age, which would mean she was born circa 1818.
Other Peppers in the same cemetery (who may or may not be family) are: Emily Pepper (the above Emma) 1855-1924, her spouse George Mundy 1853-1902, George A. Pepper 1841-1909, Ida M. (Kipp) Pepper 1861-1935, Louisa C. Pepper 1848-1939, her husband Davis G. Bingham 1841-1918, Margaret Pepper 1823-1852, Robert Pepper 1815-1871, and W. Mack Pepper, 1849-1934.
